- At least 18 years of age, though some operators require you to be 21.
- High school diploma.
- At least 2040 vision.
- Good hearing.
- The ability to see red, yellow, and green and distinguish between those colors.
- Clean driving record.

For the job outlook, railroads have slower-than-average employment growths.
